The krama is a plaid scarf in silk or cotton; traditionally worn by Cambodian it’s an important symbol of Cambodia and the Khmer population. Its weaving is made on traditional looms in Cambodian villages, the scarf generally being composed of white strips and of different colors, forming plaids of various sizes.
This scarf, which reminds of the Vichy pattern, comes from dyed cotton or silk realized traditionally and ends up in handmade tassels. It is still produced today with manual looms in some villages.
In cotton, the krama can be used in more than one way: as a scarf or stole, a pareo, a loincloth, a baby carrier but also as a sofa throw or table cloth… A krama represents 8 to 12 hours of work.
